That way I felt my own connection to earth, roots deep in the ground........

This song reminds me of those moments ............There is nothing so healing or comforting to me than walking in the park amongst those old trees and wild flowers that have been growing here on earth for so long...hope you enjoy the beautiful song and her amazing voice
Having never been before it was easy to get to and a very nice place, a little tired looking in parts, smaller than expected, but some of the villages and houses were stunning, we took Joe on the ferry and he coped so well with all the travelling. If you are going to the Isle here's what I reccomend, lunch at The Taverners in Godhsill, a gorgeous little old world village full of nice shops to browse and plenty of places to eat or just to have a coffee
I had salt beef and beetroot sandwich with a bucket of their 'famous' chips, hubby had prawn sandwiches with chips, you will never have tasted chips so good, it was sheer heaven.....in Shanklin the old part of the small town is pretty with thatched pubs on every corner lit up with coloured lights and leading down to Shanklin Chine (sadly closed during our trip) it was buzzing and friendly and everywhere seemed to be thriving, I didn't see one closed pub while there and there are so many places to eat on the Isle, whereas here there is a pub closing every 5 mins

It reminded me of an incident at the local supermarket which infuriated me a few weeks ago.<img src="/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif" alt=">:-[" class="middle" border="0">

I own several 'bags for life', a misnomer if ever I heard one, but you know what I mean, the re-usable canvas types, but, occasionally, no matter how hard I try I will forget to bring them shopping and then I have to resort to the plastic supermarket bags, now the supermarkets pretending some kind of false moral high ground have started to charge for them and it's beginning to really get up my nose, because it is total hypocrisy and as far removed from saving the environment as far away from saving the environment is ever likely to be!

Just like the 'only one bin collection a fortnight' bin collection and placing plastic bottles and tins in orange bins, it's all about giving us less for more of our hard earned tax payers money! The council would give us just one orange bin and charges a fiver for every other one, guess what, they and our dustbins are all bloody plastic!

So, on this particular day I had forgotten my 'forever bags' and requested some plastic bags at the checkout, I comfort myself with the fact that we always use any supermarket plastic bags as 'poo' bags, and we always use them all and deposit them in doggy bins.

Imagine my surprise when the lady on the checkout actually scowled at me like this...<img src="/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif" alt=">:-[" class="middle" border="0"> when I smiled and said that they would become poo bags and she showed little enthusiasm for giving me some bags.

'We do sell doggy bags you know' she said, still scowling, 'over there' she added nodding her head in the general direction of the crisp and snacks isle.

'Do you?' I replied a little sarcastically (it had been a long day and she really didn't want to get into a debate with me about the morals or general use of plastic bags)...'Well I said, I don't buy doggy bags, I prefer to recycle your bags, I smiled sweetly, and under my breath and in a whispery kind of voice added 'plus I don't want to line the pockets of your very rich supermarket owners by another single penny'

she scowled again, 'it's worse using our bags, bad for the environment you know' well....nothing but nothing gets my back up quite like being lectured whilst paying good money as a customer and by someone who by the very fact she said this obviously doesn't understand the first thing about the real problem with the environment or who the real culprits are! So I asked her to, rather than lecture me about a few plastic bags, to please write to her bosses asking them why they insist on charging customers now for shopping bags whilst still packaging everything in plastic and cling wrap, even the fruit for Gods sake, by now I am raising my voice and people have started looking... she turned a slightly pink colour and I picked up my plastic bags and flounced out now in a far worse mood than when I had arrived... bloomin cheek!!

My friend has just told me that there is a virus wiping many of them out and some of our UK species are now extinct. We don't have to do too much or spend a lot and even with a small garden can encourage them into our gardens and if you haven't got a garden you can still pot up some pot plants even on a balcony, please don't kill one if you see one because you think it might sting unless of course there is a real danger (allergy for example) but even then if you keep a butterfly net nearby you could just catch it in that and put it safely out of range.. following are some links which explains the situtation..frankly without bees we have no planet as we rely on them for our plant life, although we are unable to stop the virus, many of our bees have been wiped out thanks to pesticides and GM crops. Please take a minute read the links and you will see what I mean, there is a lot information out there if you want to find out for yourself, if we are not responsible for the creatures and our planet then who is? ...I am going to buy some lavender and put back and front of my garden, butterflies too need out help, Buddlea is fantastic for attracting butterflies..you can build a 'house' for bumbles some of the links explains how, but just pieces of log can help which you can get from fallen trees branches in your woodland..

I have made some real blog friends aswell since I began as a member here must be almost two years ago, seen some leave sadly, there are still several who were here at the beginning for me.

So....What is the most important attribute for a friend to have in your opinion?

and.....Who is your best friend?

also.....What's the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you?

One of my best friends is Joan, friends for over 30 years, always there in a crisis and then there is Irene who was so kind to me during one of the worst phases in my life...thank goodness for friends

The best thing a friend has ever done for me was a few years ago when I divorced my first husband and was left alone with three children, it was tough financially, we were left with nothing, the first christmas was dire, every penny went on the boys what I had of them anyway, then on christmas morning I found a little red stocking on the front porch with a tag saying 'from santa with love' inside were tiny luxuries I could not afford, including a jar of marmalade...it was one of those luxuries I missed but couldn't afford to buy and I had mentioned it to her weeks before and she had remembered and gone out of her way to make me feel special and it was done with such love, she also looked after my son when I went to college and baby sat once a week on a Saturday when I met someone new so i could go out and enjoy a bit of freedom and a drink....

the most important arttribute in a friend for me is loyalty and honesty

Woolacombe beach is a stunner, we stayed in a caravan which was roomy and ultra clean, bed was comfy which is important for me, hubby can sleep on a washing line if pushed

Jo did get let off the lead having been chipped the week before buy our lovely vet, lightening, that's the only way to describe the speed he went at, we thought Saxy was fast but this grfeyhound is something else, amazingly fast, it' quite exhilirating watching him, imagine being able to run like that? You'd be running all the time wouldn't you? He was leaving people on the beach open mouthed he was a winner after all ......
the little Robin, dear little thing was bedraggled and hungry in Lynmouth and came right up to our table where we were having some lunch, I did throw him some bread but he came so close but not close enough....

The sunflower we came home to, this appeared in the gravel and we left it as it didn't look like a weed, it got bigger and bigger and we realised it was a sunflower and here it is!

The interview was posted on another blog of mine last year and I am publishing it again here. Seeking The Green can be purchased here:

http://www.witchcraft.org/shop/Capall_Bann.html

The Interview

WL: Tyluann, thankyou for agreeing to being interviewed. You have just completed your first Book, 'Seeking The Green', which is due for publication soon can you tell me what it 's about and why you wrote it?

Tylluan: 'My first book with Capall Bann is called ‘Seeking the Green’ and should be out in April or May 2008. I decided to write it because as I get older I realize there will be a time when this information will be lost. My original thinking was that I didn’t want my own children to lose this knowledge, because although they have some interest in the Craft this is something that my increase as they get older, perhaps when I’m no longer around to ask. Then I felt that if others could access it too it would mean that they could also get further along in their path than I have. So I sat down with my old magical journal and Books of Shadows, and started putting it all together.'

WL: What is your opinion of paganism today?

Tyluann: I think paganism is a huge umbrella term that covers a wide range of beliefs. One of the most interesting aspects in my opinion is the rise in solitary witchcraft; you don’t have to belong to a group to be a witch. It allows you to explore different paths and ideas, and also to be quite private about what you’re doing. I think privacy is important – you should be able to be private if that’s what you want, so long as it isn’t a cloak to hide something illegal or harmful. But most pagans I’ve met are happy to talk about their beliefs once they know they’re in sympathetic company.

WL: There appears to be a growing interest in Paganism now, particularly from the young, why do you think this is?

Tyluann: I think Paganism is coming back out into the open and it’s a very attractive belief system. Partly that’s because it’s wide ranging and tolerant; but partly it’s the connection with the natural world. Since the Industrial Revolution, people have had to struggle to maintain a link with nature… even fifty years ago there was more of a link than there is nowadays. I read in the papers how children can recognize Daleks but not songbirds and I think that’s very sad.
One of the ways I introduced my own children and grandchildren to my path was by taking them on Nature Walks. We’d go first thing in the morning, or late at night (to hear the owls and see bats and stars); when we had snow I’d keep them home from school and take them on walks so they could see bird and animal footprints and realize how different the world can be under a blanket of snow. When you find this affinity with nature, paganism comes very easily. I think this is partly because we’re seeing things we cannot create, and this gives us a sense of our own limitations.

WL: What one thing would you like people to learn from your writing?

Tyluann: I hope my writing will show people just one of the many paths that are available to them. I also hope it will open their eyes to some of the wonderful things that are all around. Seeking the Green is geared towards the solitary pagan living in a town or city and it tries to show that even if you are living amongst people who are intolerant of your own beliefs, you can still lead a full, spiritual life. It also gives people the skills they need to really get started on the mystical and magical aspects of the craft.
Because so many people are solitaries, I felt it was really important to write a book that made people feel they had someone with them who would answer their questions. So I set out by thinking of all the questions I’ve asked and been asked over the years and then dealt with these. The blurb on the back of Seeking the Green says, ‘it reads like having a calm experienced guide right beside you’ which was exactly what I was aiming for (and no, I didn’t write that myself!)
The book also deals with psychic self defence which I think is very important even for complete beginners. I did a talk on it at Witchfest Wales this year and was amazed at the response from it. Learning psychic self defence can really help you clear out the emotional baggage that weighs most of us down at some point in our lives.

WL: Did you feel or act differently as a child?

Tyluann: I’m still a child within. I think most people are – or at least would like to be! The thing about children is – or at least, used to be – that they could see clearly, without the overlay of ‘sophistication’ that most adults feel they have to have. For me the saddest thing is that childhood is too short. Girls start wearing make up and talking about boyfriends when they’re about eight. It’s a pity because actually childhood is the time when a lot of magical stuff happens to us, and unless we have chance to experience this our adulthood will be so much poorer.

WL: Do you regard yourself as a 'Witch'

Tyluann: I do regard myself as a Witch as opposed to a Wiccan, but this is probably because I am a solitary. When you work in a group there has to be some sort of consensus of belief otherwise you get arguments and ultimately, complete chaos. I’ve never wanted to work in a group although I know there are some wonderful groups around and some people get a great deal out of them. It’s a question of finding a group that’s right for you. I’ve always worked alone because as a solitary I feel I’m a Pagan above all else, and I can choose where I go on my path. This also means I’m free to make my own mistakes and can’t blame anyone else for them! But you know, making mistakes isn’t always such a terrible thing. I think you can learn a lot from them. I always told my children ‘the man who never made a mistake never made anything.’

WL: What do you think makes someone a 'Witch' as opposed to Pagan?

Tyluann: Pagan is a large umbrella term that covers many beliefs, such as druidry, heathenism, wicca, witchcraft etc. It’s often easier to define it as what it’s not rather than what it is…. So, for example, Paganism is not Christianity etc. Many people who feel ‘there must be something more’ but don’t feel drawn to any of the major religions will often describe themselves as Pagan.
The strength of Paganism as a descriptive term is that it is virtually all embracing. Its weakness is that it can come to mean anything or nothing. But this is true of many other things too and it’s not a drawback per se. In my book I say that minds are like umbrellas and work best when they’re open, but the trick is not to have such an open mind that the sea can get in and allow your brains to float out!

WL: Is Paganism a religion in your opinion or is it a way of life?

Tyluann: My own opinion (and I’ve no doubt that others will disagree!) is that Paganism is a way of life. It’s not just something you believe, it’s something you have to live, however imperfectly. You have to try. Our spiritual beliefs must touch every area of our life, you can’t compartmentalise and say, ‘this is my religion’ ‘these are my politics’ etc. They all influence and affect each other. Otherwise you have a situation where basically you’re saying that you pray in Church (or wherever) on Sunday and prey on everyone else the rest of the week!

WL: Who in your life has had the biggest influence and why?

Tyluann: The biggest influence in my life has to be my family – both now and when I was a child. A good family can be wonderful, a bad one can be hellish. But ultimately families tend to make us what we are, for better or worse. I’m very family orientated, but that said, I don’t expect my children to follow my path. I think they all have a certain ‘witchiness’ about them, but this sort of thing develops over a lifetime. And of course we each have to follow our own path, nobody else can walk it for us.
Mr Penry has been a huge influence, not only because he is an excellent psychic medium, but because he has such a huge store of good sense!

WL: Do you think you would have become a witch if you had come from a conventional family?

Tyluann: I don't think background matters much. I have some Celtic background, but I have an awful lot of other things too. Our cultural or racial background may be something we’re born with, but I think we can choose our spiritual background for ourselves. If you feel drawn to say, the Celtic gods, or the Egyptian ones, then go with it. I suspect the gods call each of us in their own way and at their own good time. Your spiritual path is a lifelong quest.

WL: Do you cast spells?

Tyluann:I do and always have. In my opinion a spell is the art of influencing chance and the natural world. They do work if done properly. The problem nowadays is that an awful lot of spell work has degenerated into simply chanting spells and lighting candles – in other words people are just going through the motions. Real spell work comes from deep inside us, and it’s motivated by the sort of people we are. Magic can be used for a wide variety of purposes, which is why I have written another book called ‘Magic on the Breath’ for Capall Bann.

WL: Who in your opinion is The Geen Man?

Tyluann: The Green Man and the Green Maiden are, in my opinion, the spirits of nature that make things grow, the force that through the green fuse drives the flower, as Dylan Thomas so eloquently put it. Working with them helps open the gateways into the natural world where we can recover a great deal of lost magical knowledge that helps us on our path. In a world that has become increasingly industrialised and impersonal, the Green Man and Maiden are valuable guides who are only too willing to help us re-learn the things that really matter in our lives.

WL: Why do you think some people are frightened of Paganism and why is it often associated with the negative?

Tyluann: Paganism – especially Witchcraft - has had a bad press. Over the centuries, Christianity has tried to either Christianise and absorb certain aspects of Paganism, or it has demonised them. The result was that some deities of the old religion such as the Irish Goddess Brigit became saints, or else they became the devils and demons of the new. It’s important to remember that witch hunts occurred at the same time as the established church of the area (whether it was Catholic or Protestant) was also hunting down ‘heretics.’ The emphasis was always on making people conform, telling them what to believe and how to behave. Even now people speak of ‘witch hunts’!

WL: What one thing about you do you think would surprise people?

Tyluann: I think what probably surprises most people about me is that I’m pretty down to earth. I don’t actively try to look or act like a witch. Yet most people who get to know me realise at some point, without my telling them, that I am a witch. Must be something in the air!

Elliots 'Rhapsody on a Windy Night', not quite what I was looking for but I was so 'blown away' by it (sorry) <img src="/img/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif" alt=":>>" class="middle" border="0"> that I had to post anyway ...

TWELVE o’clock.
Along the reaches of the street
Held in a lunar synthesis,
Whispering lunar incantations
Dissolve the floors of memory
And all its clear relations
Its divisions and precisions,
Every street lamp that I pass
Beats like a fatalistic drum,
And through the spaces of the dark
Midnight shakes the memory
As a madman shakes a dead geranium.

Half-past one,
The street-lamp sputtered,
The street-lamp muttered,
The street-lamp said, “Regard that woman
Who hesitates toward you in the light of the door
Which opens on her like a grin.
You see the border of her dress
Is torn and stained with sand,
And you see the corner of her eye
Twists like a crooked pin.”

The memory throws up high and dry
A crowd of twisted things;
A twisted branch upon the beach
Eaten smooth, and polished
As if the world gave up
The secret of its skeleton,
Stiff and white.
A broken spring in a factory yard,
Rust that clings to the form that the strength has left
Hard and curled and ready to snap.

Half-past two,
The street-lamp said,
“Remark the cat which flattens itself in the gutter,
Slips out its tongue
And devours a morsel of rancid butter.”
So the hand of the child, automatic,
Slipped out and pocketed a toy that was running along the quay.
I could see nothing behind that child’s eye.
I have seen eyes in the street
Trying to peer through lighted shutters,
And a crab one afternoon in a pool,
An old crab with barnacles on his back,
Gripped the end of a stick which I held him.

Half-past three,
The lamp sputtered,
The lamp muttered in the dark.
The lamp hummed:
“Regard the moon,
La lune ne garde aucune rancune,
She winks a feeble eye,
She smiles into corners.
She smooths the hair of the grass.
The moon has lost her memory.
A washed-out smallpox cracks her face,
Her hand twists a paper rose,
That smells of dust and eau de Cologne,
She is alone
With all the old nocturnal smells
That cross and cross across her brain.”
The reminiscence comes
Of sunless dry geraniums
And dust in crevices,
Smells of chestnuts in the streets,
And female smells in shuttered rooms,
And cigarettes in corridors
And cocktail smells in bars.

The lamp said,
“Four o’clock,
Here is the number on the door.
Memory!
You have the key,
The little lamp spreads a ring on the stair.
Mount.
The bed is open; the tooth-brush hangs on the wall,
Put your shoes at the door, sleep, prepare for life.”

The last twist of the knife.

Spanx and Coffee Granules, why coffee? They make the BEST fake tan and it looks incredibly natural, now I first saw this on one the daytime tv shows which stopped me in my tracks at the time as I had an imminent weddng and wanted open toes sandals and no tights or stockings, what you do is slather your legs in lotion, while still slathered you take said coffee granules and rub into your legs, as the coffee dissolves you will get the most amazing tannned looking legs! Yes you will smell like a cafe for a while but who cares? the scent of coffee fades by the way and the tanned legs remain until bathtime. I promise you it looks good takes no time, no streaks and looks better than bottled tans. Spankx are elasticated pants which take you down a dress size and flattens your bum and tum so I wore mine to the wedding too, they are a bit 'Bridget Jones' but whose gonna know?

Sloes, they can be picked and used to make sloe gin amongst other things, and we know there is a wild walnut tree somewhere in the cotswolds where we used to live, we are going looking for it this year Juniper berries are supposed to be nice with pork chops, found on chalk downs and heaths, moors etc, wild horseradish can be found on railway embankments and waste ground, the leaves look like huge dock leaves, picked from may-september and have white flowers, and cooked chickweed is also apparently delicious!
