Following seasideman's observation on supermarket plastic packaging here: http://seasideman.blog.co.uk/2009/08/09/a-little-rant-6685216/
It reminded me of an incident at the local supermarket which infuriated me a few weeks ago.
I own several 'bags for life', a misnomer if ever I heard one, but you know what I mean, the re-usable canvas types, but, occasionally, no matter how hard I try I will forget to bring them shopping and then I have to resort to the plastic supermarket bags, now the supermarkets pretending some kind of false moral high ground have started to charge for them and it's beginning to really get up my nose, because it is total hypocrisy and as far removed from saving the environment as far away from saving the environment is ever likely to be!
Just like the 'only one bin collection a fortnight' bin collection and placing plastic bottles and tins in orange bins, it's all about giving us less for more of our hard earned tax payers money! The council would give us just one orange bin and charges a fiver for every other one, guess what, they and our dustbins are all bloody plastic!
So, on this particular day I had forgotten my 'forever bags' and requested some plastic bags at the checkout, I comfort myself with the fact that we always use any supermarket plastic bags as 'poo' bags, and we always use them all and deposit them in doggy bins.
Imagine my surprise when the lady on the checkout actually scowled at me like this...
when I smiled and said that they would become poo bags and she showed little enthusiasm for giving me some bags.
'We do sell doggy bags you know' she said, still scowling, 'over there' she added nodding her head in the general direction of the crisp and snacks isle.
'Do you?' I replied a little sarcastically (it had been a long day and she really didn't want to get into a debate with me about the morals or general use of plastic bags)...'Well I said, I don't buy doggy bags, I prefer to recycle your bags, I smiled sweetly
, and under my breath and in a whispery kind of voice added 'plus I don't want to line the pockets of your very rich supermarket owners by another single penny'
she scowled again, 'it's worse using our bags, bad for the environment you know' well....nothing but nothing gets my back up quite like being lectured whilst paying good money as a customer and by someone who by the very fact she said this obviously doesn't understand the first thing about the real problem with the environment or who the real culprits are! So I asked her to, rather than lecture me about a few plastic bags, to please write to her bosses asking them why they insist on charging customers now for shopping bags whilst still packaging everything in plastic and cling wrap, even the fruit for Gods sake, by now I am raising my voice and people have started looking... she turned a slightly pink colour and I picked up my plastic bags and flounced out now in a far worse mood than when I had arrived... bloomin cheek!!
